What is an IP address?

Through IP addresses we are able to locate and identify information on the Internet. Think of an IP address (or Internet Protocol address) as the actual location of a web address. Domain names make it a lot easier to remember web addresses, but in the end they are just a simpler form of an IP address.

Try this – instead of typing google.com into your search bar type 74.125.224.72

as you can see this IP address will take you to Google’s web address.

IP addresses are what allow communication through any device connected to the Internet to occur. Every device, network, and server that is connected to the Internet is given an IP address (multiple devices can be connected to the same IP address).
